Financial Review

Most booksellers enjoy reading books—not keeping them! But your finances tell a story too. While you probably won’t find reading financial documents as compelling as picking up the new Kingsolver novel, it’s important to pay attention to your business narrative.

If you’re intimidated by the financial aspects of your business, help is on the way. We’ve trained lots of math-phobic owners in the fine art of reading financial statements to uncover the story-- and the meaning-- beneath the numbers. Even if you’re a pro at reading and creating your own financial documents, you may appreciate a bookstore-savvy financial review of your business, along with some suggestions to improve your bottom line.

For many stores, an annual financial check-up is helpful, at which point we set goals for the coming year. Because we understand both the numbers and the operational realities of bookstore life, we make suggestions for changes that are realistic in the context of your business.

We provide consulting services to:

  • Review overall financial position
  • Make suggestions for improved cash flow
  • Evaluate inventory management
  • Find ways to increase sales and/or reduce expenses
  • Identify and address operational inefficiencies
  • Create and implement financial monitoring tools
